I hope that Toyota isn't looking at the success of the Smart to gauge demand in North America. It would be comparing apples to oranges. The Smart is, IMHO, a less than perfect car. Kudos for them to bring it here, though. And, I must say, that it looks like folks are snapping them up nonetheless.

Toyota would sell every iQ that they sent here...no doubt. The Yaris sells great, and that's an econobox deluxe.
OK, this makes me cry...

I don't know what the sales numbers are for the Smart fortwo, but what I do know is that I signed up for one last October/November and my projected delivery date is January to March 2009.

One and a half years backlog seems to indicate that they're selling faster than they can build them, which sounds like a pretty good performance to me (well, not to me personally, seeing that I'm the one at the receiving end of the wait )

I'd take a Toyota version over the Smart in the blink of an eye...if they'd only sell them in NA! I was really excited when I just read about the iQ for the first time, but it was such a short burst of Hope

It makes me really sad that I can choose between 15 types of SUVs but there is exactly one City car on sale...and that has over a year's wait.

Maybe it's time to get that motorcycle license after all

A.

Re: Official Press Release

I agree that this is a superior car to the smart car. Now, how to import it from the UK to the US is the tricky part. Any ideas??

Re: Official Press Release

Yep, once again North America gets shafted when it comes to getting good imports. N.A. always seem to get them years after the Asian and European markets do. I don't know why they don't just release a vehicle in all markets. If it doen't work out in one market, then you discontinue and hopefully they don't lose much in that market.

Take the Honda Fit for example. It's been in the Asian and European markets for years and have finally just arrived in North America these past few years and it's selling like hotcakes! If Honda had released it sooner in N.A., then wouldn't they have made more money during those missed years. I'm sure the car makers have their reasons for being selective in their market releases.
