Is it ever gonna come to US?

Hi you all. I hear what the member said that they might be holding off announcing iQ waiting for Prius sales and such, but I am wondering if maybe they just aren't going to bring the iQ here at all. Maybe only the EV (electric in the iQ body) in 2012. They have announced that. I called a Toyota dealership where the manager said the smart was too small to be safe & I laughed and told her she needs to come up with a better sales pitch since iQ is the same sized body within a foot and has 5 stars safety. It turns out they really don't know anything about the iQ and were trying to encourage me to get a "larger than smart" Yaris. The nice woman was a good sport and listened to my information and said that she was definitely gonna check out the iQ now. I know I am obsessive, but literally this is the 3rd Toyota or Scion manager at different locations that haven't really heard of the iQ, nevertheless when it will come here. I am wondering if only the EV will come after all (& in a few years from now).

I don't know anything... Just saying...

The best you can do for the US iQ is actually to buy/recommend Smart in the US. If it turns out to be popular, then Toyota should be less reluctant to introduce some competition for the Smart.

Scion iQ Concept to Debut at New York Auto Show; Can it Win American Hearts?

When we reported back in early October that the Toyota iQ would debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show as a Scion, turns out we jumped the gun a bit by three shows. Apparently, the Scion-badged iQ our sources saw was headed to a Toyota dealer event instead of L.A. at the time. Nevertheless, Toyota will be bringing the rebadged iQ concept to New York next month as a pre-production look at the newest member of the automaker's youth brand lineup.

The iQ itself will come to market as a sub-$15,000 two-door subcompact hatch with enough hip, quirky appeal to potentially lure some buyers away from the similarly tiny Smart Fortwo. We're likely to see the 1.5L engine from the Yaris under the iQ's hood mated to either a five-speed manual or Toyota's Multidrive CVT.

When we drove a Toyota-badged iQ last year, we concluded that it rode more maturely than the Smart, but featured virtually non-existent rear seat room, an equally impractical trunk, and uninspiring behavior when hustled. Additionally, considering upcoming European rivals such as the Ford Fiesta and the Volkswagen Golf MK6 will likely match the iQ's fuel economy while offering more room and practicality, it was hard to even praise that facet of the diminutive hatchback.

Still, there may be a few changes yet to come for the Scion-branded iQ when it enters the U.S. market. We'll have all the updates when we bring you live coverage from the New York Auto Show next month, but meanwhile, what are your thoughts on a Scion iQ? Will the Japanese subcompact have what it takes to win over American hearts?

What I don't understand is if it truly is the iQ, why are they calling it a concept? The iQ is already being delivered elsewhere on the globe. While I realize the powertrain might change, as well as airbags/seating, I still don't think that's enough to call it a new "concept".

It's a concept for Scion versus a production model for Toyota, especially since they may want to tweak it for the US market some more. At least they're actually showing it versus just being a rumor.

Thay think Ford Focus and VW Golf are competitors to the iQ, showing their obliviousness to the segments. Go figure.

So if the iQ is being shown at NY, any guesses on when is it likely to be for sale? I am so excited to finally hear something. ;D

I was thinking about options if it comes to the us as a Scion. Options Ive seen on the iQ in other countries like leather, keyless start, and pearl white are not available on current scion in the US. Unless its a release series or something. What are your thought? What options would you like to see?

Looks like it has a wide body on it. Kinda mean lookin' too. Im thinking black is the way to go, but I'll have to see what colors will be available

Re: Is it ever gonna come to US?

Yeah. It has always been wider than the smart (more shoulder room?). It would look great in black.
I am all about this green. :)

Found this other picture. I read on scionlife that this could be a five axis car which is a modified version of the iq. Link below if picture doesn't show up

There is a lot of talk online that these pics are photoshopped. The one with the two halves sure looks fake (back end of a VW bug?). I guess we will know on in a week whether it was or not. I like the "smile" better on these pics than the original. Less grunty. :)
Go lime green!

Doubtful that the photos are frauds although they were probably enhanced with photoshop to make the images clearer. Looks like this might indeed a concept according to http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=255794

fiveaxis does a lot of work for manufacturers based on their (the mfg.) drawings which makes sense as it is probably cheaper to outsource a prototype than to make it in house. Here is the fiveaxis website http://www.fiveaxis.net/

fiveaxis has done quite a bit of work on customized Scions and there appears to be an established relationship between them and Scion. Just a few days and there should be some clarity as to what Scion's plans are for the iQ.

Keeping my fingers crossed for some good news out of New York this week!

I like that lime green color, but I'm hoping they bring that deep purple color from Europe when/if they finally go on sale here.

iQ girl7 04-05-2009 12:44 PM

Re: Is it ever gonna come to US?

Yeah, that purple is my second choice, but I really think something this small need to be extra visible on the road. I think they need to offer really bright colors. The purple isn't bright enough to stand out like this car should, but I do like it as a color. This year's smart car color choices are very drab and many people complained about that. I expect next year smart will offer some brighter colors. iQ needs to do that from the start. Of course, if not, I will look into wrapping it. There are some amazing wrap places out there for smart and I hope they will do that for the iQ too. How's lime green zebra sound. LOL :D

I hear what you're saying about small cars and bright colors, still, I like dark colors on most cars. If the purple doesn't come here, my next choice is black.

Re: Is it ever gonna come to US?

With the smart car, my original plan was black and get lime green flames. :)
Now I am thinking lime green all the way. I am so anxious to hear when & how much.
Hopefully it will be reasonable.

One of my main concerns with the smart was the availability of parts in the US.
I wonder what will happen to smart when iQ does come here.
If iQ is a lot more pricey I imagine smart will be safe, but if it is the same/close then I wonder if smart will leave US.

I hope we'll know soon.

One thing I really like about smart is the community.
I hope we gather a connection like that here once more people know about the iQ.

Re: Is it ever gonna come to US?

I know! Right? I decided if I don't hear anything by the time the 2010 Smarts come out (like November/December),
I am getting one of those. The official word I have heard is that they are testing the response from the US and will give word around December 2009. My thought is that if they are still deciding up until December 09 then when would they start production? I know there are modifications to be made too. If it was AVAILABLE December 09, that is one thing but my currently vehicle is elderly and I can't wait years more. Already been waiting one year. I also keep hearing the Scion is saying the iQ won't be the least expensive car on their line up. This concerns me. Sorry for the downer of a reply, but I am frustrated with not hearing anything too.

My info is from this article:

I'd like to replace my Focus about this time next year. I won't have to, but I'd like to. I've already pretty much ruled out the smart. The other car I'd consider is the upcoming Ford Fiesta. I'll wait until it gets here to actually decide.

Re: Is it ever gonna come to US?

Finally getting some specifics:

http://www.motortrend.com/features/a..._iq/index.html

"As we predicted last year, Toyota is preparing its tiny iQ 3+1 city car for North America, badged as a Scion. The car could arrive late in 2010 as an 2011 model, or in early 2011 as a 2012. Under Scion's revived one-model-and-out strategy, the iQ would be replaced with something different after a single five-year cycle." more info in article...........

Report: Scion iQ to hit U.S. soil in fall 2010
08/17/2009, 12:44 PMBY DREW JOHNSON

Toyota’s Scion brand has been struggling to find buyers over the last few months – with sales down 57.8 percent this year – but the funky brand should receive a shot in the arm next year. According to inside sources, the Scion iQ concept shown at the 2009 New York Motor Show will be arriving in U.S. dealerships in 2010.

Although Toyota – Scion’s parent company – has yet to officially announce the iQ is U.S.-bound, Jack Hollis, vice president of the Scion division, reportedly revealed to Scion dealers that the iQ would be arriving in U.S. dealerships by fall of 2010.
“Jack told us it’s coming next September or October,” a large Toyota dealer told Automotive News.
At 117.5 inches long, the iQ is about one foot longer than the Smart ForTwo, offering seating for three adults and one child. A three-cylinder engine is available in the Euro-spec iQ – which has been on sale since late 2008 – but the Scion version will likely do with a more powerful 1.3L four-cylinder. Fuel economy is expected to top 60 mpg.
Like all Scion models, the iQ will likely be offered in only one trim level, but will offer a number of customization options. No pricing information has been revealed, but the tiny hatchback is expected to carry a price tag of about $15,000.

Here's something I've been wondering, and perhaps our friends in Europe can enlighten us... How do the Fiat 500 and the iQ compare to each other? What are the pros and cons of each, how do they compare in size, etc? From what I read in reviews I almost think I like the 500 more than the iQ...

Thanks!

It is already old news that the Fiat 500 is going to be on sale in the US in about a year. Probably imported at first, but then built at one of Chrysler's plants in Mexico.

Not sure how to take that - or you - but if you search around you'll find it's been reported in lots and lots of reputable news sources. It's not just an Internet rumor.
