Engine choices and fuel economy - speculations

We have all heard it will come with 3 engine. Two petrol and one diesel, one being a new 1.0 developed together with Yamaha.

We have also heard they should achieve about 100g/km CO2 ratings, which seems easy to given that Aygo emits 109g/km for both the 1.0l petrol and the 1.4l diesel engine.

The German car magazine, Autobild, talks about the possibility of a 3L version. They don't mean a 3.0 engine, but instead an engine that sips only 3 liters of fuel for 100km. (78mpg).


What will the engines be and what about the fuel economy? Here are my speculations.

The Yamaha engine is the only new one that I have heard about and Yamaha doesn't have its expertise in diesels, so I suppose this will be a petrol engine and I doubt it will become a 3L engine.

The other petrol engine can either be the usual 1.3 (seen in Yaris and Aygo) or perhaps a Kei-car engine with 660cc. Neither will get 33km/l if the fuel economy of similar cars are used as indicators.

The diesel will most likely be the 1.4 that was introduced in Yaris and used in cars like Corolla and Mini. It gets 22,2km/l in the Yaris, and a similar engine gets 24,4 km/l in Aygo (PSA diesel), but it is the only engine I can see will get near what the 1.2 liter diesel got in Volkswagen Lupo 3L.

That is:

- 660cc petrol: 22km/l (This is the least likely engine and I doubt you can get that good a fuel economy in daily driving. The smart 0.6 got about 20,5km/l)
- 1.0l Yamaha petrol: 24km/l (This engine might surprise in fuel economy. The similar engine in Smart ForTwo gets 21,3km/l)
- 1.3l petrol: 19km/l (Doesn't sound like a smart choice. Go for the diesel if you want power)
- 1.4l diesel: 30km/l (The 0.6l Smart diesel gets this kind of fuel economy and Toyota stands strong in diesel technology)

I hope they go with the 1nzfe with VVTi. It's a really good engine. nice and small. It comes in the Yaris. I think 50 MPG would be the base MPG if this engine is used.

It might be a choice for the states if the iQ gets there, but I think it is a little too big for the European market.

(1nzfe is the 1.5l, which was in the first gen. Yaris, and the only choice for the American market - in Europe it was used in the T-spirit Yaris, but the second gen uses the more powerful 1.

As mentioned in the first post, Toyota does have quite some experience in this are, and with the introduction of the system outside of Japan, we might also be lucky enough to see it in a diesel

Right now, I will say the 1.3 is the obvious candidate for the "big" petrol engine for Europe.

1.0 liter 3cylinder manual: 65.7mpg. These are imperial measurements and translate into:
23.26km/l
54.7 mpg US

1.0 liter 3cylinder Multidrive CVT: 60.1mpg =
21.28km/l
50.0 mpg US

The specs for the iQ are also... quite nice (see specs when following the link) 


BTW.
0.74km/l from target in my guess. The manufacturer was wrong though - Daihatsu actually made the 3cyl 1.0 
I think my guess regarding the 1.3 liter will be more off target - I didn't expect stop'n'start technology in that one! Expect 20-21km/l instead.

Yaris has just received a face lift which included upgrading the engines to the ones from iQ. There are some speculations regarding the fuel economy for the 1.33 petrol engine. Some think it might get better fuel economy than the 1.0, while others are more pessimistic.

Here are the numbers as they come out when you use the Yaris spec sheet for reference:

Model, CO2, fuel economy:
Yaris 1.0: 118g/km, 5,0 l/100 km = 20km/l (official)
Yaris 1.33: 120g/km, 5,1 l/100 km = 19,6km/l (official)
iQ 1.0: 99g/km, 4,3 l/100 km = 23,3km/l (official)
iQ 1.33: 101g/km, 22,8km/l (deduced)

To deduce the numbers like this does not make perfectly accurate numbers, as the car maker can choose to tune the engines differently for the individual models (just take a look at the HP rating for the engines in the Auris).

When you look at these numbers, it seems odd if Toyota chooses to make the 1.33 emit 113g/km (as most of the articles mention), when the Yaris manages to keep the emissions for the engines nearly identical.

It seems to be possible to keep the 1.33 below 100g/km, and thus free from road tax: just make it emit 2g CO2 less!

Toyota's iqblog has numbers on the 1.33L iQ now, along with a new trim level.

They claim the CO2 emissions are 113g/km, and the combined mpg is 58.9.

Yes. That is the press release i keep finding everywhere. Some of these say the numbers are still to be finalized, and I can't find any official final numbers from Toyota.

I anticipate if you attending at these numbers, it seems odd if Toyota chooses to accomplish the 1.33 afford 113g/km (as a lot of of the online writing mention), if the Yaris manages to accumulate the emissions for the engines about identical.

I am a 1.0 vvti petrol engine Toyita iQ.

I have done many journeys and now have 8.500 miles on the clock since I was released onto the road in Feb 2010.

I can easily exceed 65mpg on long runs and the worst gas mileage I have achieved was 38.9mpg on a 150 mile trip at an average speed of 73.3mph.
